The clients came to us with the goal of transforming their dated 1980s brick house into their forever home. A key challenge was the original kitchen—a small, boxy space tucked into the centre of the home that couldn’t support their growing list of functional needs. With aspirations for a more practical and spacious layout, they provided a long list of must-haves that simply couldn’t be achieved in the existing footprint.
After considering multiple layout options, the decision was made to relocate the kitchen to the former formal dining room, opening up the middle of the home. A load-bearing wall— now behind the new ‘drop zone’—presented a significant design constraint and required careful planning to maintain structural integrity. Another non-negotiable was incorporating a new laundry into the plan, as the existing one was being converted into an ensuite. While the clients were focused on functionality, they entrusted the designer with full creative control to transform their simple request for a “white kitchen” into a unique, timeless centrepiece of their home.
While maintaining a clean, simple aesthetic, thoughtful design elements were introduced— such as the slim-profile Chifley door, shark nose edging to the benchtops, and white handles and knobs that seamlessly blend into the palette. Statement features, without being over the top, include a partially stone-clad rangehood cabinet and a bold, chunky island to match, bringing subtle drama and balance to the space.
